Celebrating Fifty Trips Around The Sun With A Transatlantic Cruise – Day 11

We were awake just after 07:00 and took our time getting up a ready. While we were getting ourselves organized, there were two announcements within a few minutes of each other for somebody from deck 8 to contact guest services. This was kind of strange. This is pretty common on port days when people are late returning from port. Having said that, this did not happen at all this cruise. The other scenario where this tends to happen is the last morning if there is an issue with the onboard account. Neither applied here as we were on day two of a six-day crossing. We figured that this would remain one of life’s mysteries.

Once we were ready, we headed up to the Windjammer for some breakfast. Graham had fruit with granola and yoghurt. I had plain congee with fried onions and ham scrambled eggs and a pear. After breakfast, I headed back to the cabin to put on my swimsuit. We were heading for the aft pool, but the lifeguard there asked us to head to the middle pool. That pool was freezing. Graham went for a swim, but I passed. I was talking to one of the lifeguards at the lifeguard station. While doing so, I found out what all the announcements had been about. A seventeen-year-old girl had not been seen by her family since the previous evening. They suspected that she had hooked up with somebody and slept in a different cabin. I suppose they have so many sensors and cameras on a modern ship like this that they knew nobody had gone overboard. They were going to wait until 11:00 and if she still had not turned up, they were going to do a full roll call. This did not happen. She must have turned up before then. I would not have wanted to be in her shoes.

Once Graham had enough exercise, we headed up one deck to the hot tubs. One thing that I really like about Odyssey is that they have infinity hot tubs on the sun deck. They are rather nice. Up to this point, we had used the hot tubs on the pool deck, but I wanted to use the infinity hot tubs at least once. From the hot tub we had ended up in, we could see the aft pool. I was very surprised that aqua aerobics was able to go ahead considering that we were told that we could not use the pool. This was way too wild for me that day and the lifeguard on duty did not look very happy.

Once we had enough hot tub time, we headed back to the cabin for a quick shower and to get changed. Then we headed down to the Music Hall for morning trivia. We scored 15 out of 20, which I thought was pretty impressive. However, the winning score was 19.

Next up was progressive trivia in the Two70. We did not do nearly as well there with a measly 7 out of 20. Graham had a theory that we used up all of our good answers during morning trivia. He may have been on to something. After progressive trivia, we stayed in the Two70 for big trio trivia. This was another new concept for us. This was a three-part trivia with 10 questions each. The first set was general knowledge. The second set consisted of scenes from movies where the actors had been Photoshopped out, but the clothes had been left behind. We had to guess the name of the movie. The final set was music trivia. We got 11 out of 30 and the winning score was 23.

After this, we headed up to the Windjammer for some lunch. Graham had a cheeseburger with fries and macaroni cheese. I had some beef goulash and mashed potatoes. When I went to check out the dessert situation, I spotted that there was only a very short line at the made to order pasta station. I had some made to order fusilli with beef and vegetables in tomato sauce. This was very nice.

After lunch, we quickly headed back to the cabin. Graham wanted to get his telescope, and I wanted to get my iPad. I wanted to see if I could get a round lounger in the solarium. On the way, I got a vanilla and strawberry ice cream. I was just about to give up when I found a round lounger near the opposite entrance. I spent a happy afternoon alternating between reading and napping. At some stage Graham came by, but he decided that he preferred to be outside.

When I started to get a bit hot as I was on the sunny side of the solarium, I went to find Graham. This did not take very long. We then headed for the Cafe Two70 to redeem our coffee vouchers. Graham had an Americano with a coconut white chocolate cookie and an oatmeal and raisin cookie. I just had a latte.

Once we finished our coffees, we headed down to the Music Hall for trivia @ 5. We scored 8 out of 20 and the winning score was 15. On the way out, I took a photo of a piece of art that is in the stairwell outside the Music Hall that I really liked. Then we headed back to the cabin for some downtime. I studied the Daily Compass and spotted that the theme in the Windjammer was Savouring the Silk Road, which consisted of Malaysian, Thai and Indian food. I was actually pretty hungry at this point and the menu that evening did not appeal. However, Graham was not biting. I read for a while and Graham had a nap. When the alarm went off, we got ready for dinner and got some photos on the way to the dining room.

The menu that night was A Taste of Royal History. This theme had so much potential as there were some amazing dishes that had disappeared when they launched the new menus. However, the actual menu was lacklustre at best. Most of the dishes I could not remember ever seeing on a menu before. The only thing that appealed to us was the dessert, which was pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. We decided to just do dessert. We both had a slice of the pecan pie, which was amazing. We also had a glass of the Chateau St. Michelle Riesling each.

Graham was not particularly hungry that evening and the pecan pie hit the spot. I however still had a hole to fill. I knew part of the offering at the Windjammer that evening was satay, which I really like. We headed up there and I had a plate of beef satay with peanut sauce, which was really nice.

Part of the reason why Graham was off his food was that he had developed a mouth ulcer. I suggested that he got a shot of vodka for medicinal purposes that he could dap on. This worked pretty well. We got this from the aft Lime and Coconut Bar. The drink of the day was the Raspberry Rickey. I got one of those to take back to the cabin as a nightcap. I had this while I was reading a chapter in my book and then I got ready for bed. I put my gadgets one hour forward and then I went to sleep for my last night in my 40s.
